Calories…count them for your Car not Your Body!

Calories are a measure of energy composed in the food we eat, but I challenge anyone to show me one. They are calculated from sophisticated mechanical instruments and the premise is that if you consume a calorie it requires a certain amount of energy to burn it off. Hence, “a calorie in is a calorie out and energy in is energy out” is the current mantra. It is based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics and is disconnected to how our bodies use the food we eat. Calories are excellent for measuring how machines use energy but horrible at how our bodies use food.

One hundred calories of potato chips, one hundred calories of prime steak, one hundred calories of Romaine lettuce and one hundred calories of ice cream are different and will be metabolized differently…this is a fact! A calorie is not a calorie to our complex bodies. Protein, fat and starch calories are different and our bodies will use them differently. It is all about Quality not Quantity when it comes to health. If you consume junk you will become junk; mental and elemental.

Practice In Futility

If you are trying to lose weight do not count calories for this is a Practice in Futility. It is all about the quality of the food you are eating. If you are eating foods that are nutrient-dense and packed with good fats you will be on your way to weight loss and it does not matter how many calories you are consuming.

Eighty Percent Full

Do not eat at the dinner table, as well, until you are completely full. This is foolish for anyone trying to lose weight (usually counting calories). You should eat until you are about 80% full then walk away from the food. I hope I am speaking to a fairly intelligent audience…so you know when you’ve over-done it.

Enzymes With your Meals

Take digestive enzymes with your meals. I can not begin to list the benefits of taking an enzyme with your meals. For instinct, protein has to be unraveled from its quaternary configuration in phase-one gastric digestion with hydrochloric acid, then cleaved in the middle and ends to be broken down into animo acids in phase-two duodenal digestion with trypsin and chymotrypsin. This allows for maximum absorption of the nutrients from the food you are eating; giving your body the stuff it needs to function at it best! In this vein, as well, do not drink a lot of fluids, of any kind, when you are eating a mixed meal. You are diluting your digestive enzymes rendering them ineffective.

Exoneration of Saturated Fats, Coconut Oil and Butter

When I consult with customers my first question to them is “What are your goals?”…is it weight lose, is it improved strength and longevity or maybe more muscle mass? These goals drive my counsel. When research is done that guides the dietary practices of a nation the goals of the researchers should be to improve health maintenance and disease prevention. It should be indisputable, stand the test of time and have real world applicability. Saturated fats have, for more than a half century, been the epic antagonist of heart health in this country lead by researchers, academics, doctors and government officials who, through ignorance or a desire to line their pockets, have named fats the villain in our diets.

We are told that saturated fats are the villain when it comes to heart health and are to be avoided as much as possible. Foods like eggs, butter, coconut oil, lard, whole milk and animal meats should to be minimally consumed as to prevent cholesterol provision that would cause your LDL to rise resulting in subsequent risk of heart attacks and stroke. This is the infamous “Diet-Heart-Hypothesis.” This has never been substantiated nor proven and when one digs deeper into the subject they will be amazed to learn that saturated fats are actually very healthy and their utilization does not result in heart disease!

I am here to tell you that consuming saturated fats should not be feared and should be placed on the top shelf as a superior food to consume everyday. I consume them with other EFA’s, MCT, oils, dairy, eggs (4/d everyday!!) and my lipid panel and cholesterol profile always come back with excellent results.

Ten reasons why I recommend these fats:

  2. Ketogenesis and ketosis is a superior diet modality

Leg Rhythm comes from Egg Wisdom

Wow! Said to be the most complete food on the Planet. I venture to say it is, incontestably, the most perfect food humans have been devouring since the dawn of time. It has not faltered yet in its provision of vibrant and lustrous life to all that consumes it. It is a super-source food that blesses us with 70 hardy calories, 6 gms of protein (full spectrum 20 amino acids), 0.6 gms of carbohydrates and 222.2 gms of very, very valuable lipids! It is “incredible”, yet at the same time controversial. It’s been credited with giving us extraordinary strength and stamina, yet debilitating us with heart disease from high cholesterol. I am talking about the amazing and fabulous egg.

Vince and Ron touted the egg as the best thing to eat if you were trying to make gains in strength and muscle mass. They explained how the amino acids supplied us with nitrogen which maintained anabolism (muscle building) by up-ticking our metabolism via a positive nitrogen balance. However, if we did not eat enough protein (amino acids) this would disrupt the nitrogen balance and cause catabolism or muscle wasting. I encourage you to consume at least a dozen eggs per week to stay optimally and supremely healthy, so swap out a carb and replace with an egg. Learn to cook your eggs in the most palatable way to increase compliance. Never overcook your eggs (heat denatures protein). Use unrefined salt on your eggs. Eat range-fed eggs. EAT THE WHOLE DAMN THING – never throw out the yoke. Fat and protein should be eaten together. Carbs and fiber should be eaten together. Try not to mix protein and carbs, i.e., bread and meat. Remember, an egg has to grow into a full chick with all the systems intact. For instance, it needs everything necessary to create the nervous, digestive and immune systems. For Nutritional ketosis, strength and fitness, weight control and keto-genesis, eggs are an absolute, unequivocal and unquestionable…MUST!!!

(HANGRY) means you are Withdrawing from Carb Addiction!

We have all heard of the term “Hangry” which is a portmanteau for being in a state of hunger and angry, simultaneously.   It is a confluence of symptoms that will start innocuously with abdominal growling and stomach pangs (borborygmus), gas and indigestion, and ultimately leads to full blown mental irritation, agitation and a bad temper.  The comical (Snickers) commercials demonstrate people’s personalities changing because they are craving this food (typically carbs).  Of course, the second they consume this food they return to their normal selves.  The term and the commercial is now a mainstay in the American experience because it is so relatable to virtually everyone that consumes the standard American diet (SAD).  It is so relatable to most Americans because the “SAD” diet is the most pervasive food environment that we are exposed to.  And, we have been told by every authority in the health and food industries that if we follow their recommendations on what to consume – and how to exercise- that we will be healthy and live long lives.  This could not be furthest from the truth.  Hanger is the result of chronic overexposure to carbohydrates and when the body is devoid of them for too long, withdrawal ensues.  This process can best be treated with fats and oils and placing oneself into nutritional ketosis where the body is no longer in glycolysis.

It is my opinion from 20 years of reading and studying nutrition and medical science that the connection between being in a state of “hangry” and in a state of poor health is inextricably linked.  Hanger or hangry is a clinical state of substance withdrawal and the substance you are withdrawing from is a carbohydrate.  The net carbohydrates  that are most responsible for this addiction biochemistry would be the simple saccharides like fructose, glucose (aka dextrose) and sucrose – albeit, interchangeably.  If people would understand that they were not directly responsible for their hanger, obesity, hypertension, their vascular diseases, their cancer and degenerative syndromes, they would rejoice that there is hope in ameliorating and healing their  sicknesses, illnesses and all the symptoms they bear.  Growling stomach is a symptom of severe sugar withdrawal and we should not mistaken it as something that is normal because sugar addiction and sugar withdrawal is not something that should ever be taken lightly!

We have been inundated with the idea that the carbohydrate is a necessary macronutrient; that, it is just as important for complete and full healthiness as its cousins, protein and fat.  As mentioned before in my articles, there is no such thing as an “essential” carbohydrate; meaning human life does not depend on it for sustenance. We will not parish if we ceased consuming it.  Hence, we can live healthy and full lives without consuming one bit of a carbohydrate.  So, why are we told to eat the stuff by experts and government leaders?  Naturopathy and  Orthomolecular Science has proven that nutritional ketosis is one of the best treatment modalities for supreme health and disease prevention, yet we allow the food corporations,  politicians, healthcare (sickcare) industry and pharmaceutical giants to advise us and guide our food and healthcare policy. They tell us to consume carbohydrates because it is a necessary macronutrient.  The tenets of naturopathy and nutrition science should guide our food and health directives, not pharmaceutical giants and food multinationals…Period!

Carbohydrates are the only macro-food that cause addiction and subsequent withdrawal if eaten in saturation.  I have read 10’s of articles on the phenomenon of “hanger” and not one relate it to sugar-addiction-withdrawal.  They say it is real, they describe it as a “phenomenon”, some even go into this elaborate neuro-biological-emotional-axis in explaining its origins.  I have yet to read one that explains it for what it truly is…the first sign of sugar withdrawal!

As a nurse for more than two decades and working in the ICU and critical care, I have witnessed patients going through severe withdrawal from alcohol to opioids. It is a brutal site and withdrawal can be deadly at this level. I am not referring to this level of withdrawal.  But we need to recognize that a growling stomach is neither healthy or normal. If this approach was taken then we would normally ask: what are we addicted to and how should we treat it?

I eluded to the treatment earlier and that is “nutritional ketosis”.  Vince Gironda and Ron Kosloff have been preaching about fats and proteins being the principle foods for superior health and strength for forty years.  Now it is the internet sensation…ketosis, ketones, nutritional ketosis, ketogenesis.  There are over a couple hundred thousand searches for it each month on Google (Paleo Mag. Veganism, vegetarianism, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, LA Fitness and Nutra-System are just a few of the mainstream weight loss paradigms one could utilize to loose weight.  All, for the commercialized hopes and dreams of losing weight or possibly a temporizing protocol of the idea of perpetual weight lose and feeling good about giving sophisticated liars your hard earned money. Nothing could be further from the truth!  Carbohydrates are a complete “Nonessential” macro-foods.  I will not even call it a nutrient because it really is not a nutrient in the true sense of the word.

If you are feeling ill, Stop consuming Carb-age!!

Tired of being tired? Feeling like you just got to have a nap after you’ve just eaten a meal? Love to just watch a little TV after you’ve eaten; or have that mid-day siesta? Well, you’re in good company because most Americans are in the same boat with the same complaints I just described. You know, you shouldn’t feel that way after eating because the food is there to, well, give you energy…right?? And, how is it that the food is freakin making you tired. Why is the food you’ve just eaten making you fatigued and lethargic? Seems oxymoronic! Let us explore briefly why this is the case for us “smart Westerners” who have the latest and greatest technology and culinaria at our disposal.
Unless you have some clinical pathologies going on, you should be getting the energy out of your food after consuming it, albeit mammalian metabolism really is not that simple. However, you should not feel this bad after eating. The main reason is you are probably consuming too many carbohydrates. Let me inform you of a couple of “need-to-know” things about carb(age)s. First, all carbs are non-essential; you do not need them in your diet… at all…none of them! not even fruit! Vegetables, especially the green ones, are loaded with phyto and micro-nutrients but very low in carbs. Second, the culturally sophisticated propaganda by Big Ag to convince us that we need to consume this stuff at the levels we are consuming them should be criminal! We are consuming carbs to the point of acute and chronic illness and it has morphed into a national (and, now an international) pandemic! Third, most carbs are converted to alcohol before the cell utilizes them! This is how you become a “carboalcolholic”, consuming massive carb-loads will mimic alcoholism, yet you would never suspect that piece of bread is triggering addictive bio and neurochemical pathways very similar, if not the same, as that seen in alcoholism.
You load up on carbs (because you’re addicted to them); your plasma insulin spikes; it precipitously plummets your plasma glucose levels (below baseline); you experience lethargy and severe fatigue! This is a cursory take on why you feel like crap after you eat a meal. So, feeling ill? Stop consuming Carb(age).
